Constitutional Court of Korea

λŒ€ν•œλ―Όκ΅ ν—Œλ²•μž¬νŒμ†Œ / Constitutional Court of the Republic of Korea

ReviewedΒ· 2026-08-03Seoul

Created with the 1987 constitution that ended military rule, and among the most consequential constitutional courts in Asia. It has removed two presidents on impeachment referred by the National Assembly β€” Park Geun-hye in 2017 and Yoon Suk Yeol in 2025 β€” decriminalised abortion in 2019 with a deadline for legislative replacement, and struck down the death penalty's application in specific contexts while upholding it in principle. Its individual complaint jurisdiction means an ordinary litigant can reach it without a lower court's leave, which is the main reason its docket is large.
