The apex of the ordinary hierarchy. Lebanese private law derives from the French tradition through the Ottoman Mecelle and the Mandate-era Code of Obligations and Contracts of 1932. A separate Council of State (Majlis Shura al-Dawla) is the apex administrative court, and the Constitutional Council reviews legislation.
