The principal civil trial court, alongside Magistrates' Courts for summary criminal matters and High Courts for serious crime and commercial cases. Sri Lanka's mixed legal inheritance shows here: Roman-Dutch law governs much of property and delict, English law governs commercial and maritime matters, and Kandyan law, Thesawalamai and Muslim law apply as personal law to particular communities, with Quazi courts handling Muslim marriage and divorce.
