Established by the 2008 constitution. Its independence has been contested in practice: judges were detained in 2018 after ordering the release of opposition figures, and the bench was subsequently reconstituted. Maldivian law applies Islamic law as a source where the statutes are silent, and the Supreme Court has the final say on that interaction.
