Appeals to the Privy Council ended in 1985. The court's most contested territory is Article 121(1A), which removes from the civil courts any matter within the jurisdiction of the Syariah courts: because the two hierarchies cannot review each other, conversion, custody and burial disputes involving a converting spouse have produced genuinely unresolved conflicts, addressed in cases such as Indira Gandhi (2018), where the court held that judicial review of a religious authority's action remained available.
