The three branches

Executive — President of the Republic
Head of state and government; five-year term, renewable once.
Legislative — National Assembly
Unicameral, 220 members.
Judicial — Supreme Court and Constitutional Court
Superior Council of the Judiciary governs the career.
Local — Eighteen provinces
Governors appointed by the President; local elections long deferred.

How legislation is made

Bills are debated in general and in detail and voted by the National Assembly, then promulgated by the President, who may request preventive review by the Constitutional Court.
