The independence Constitution of 30 November 1966, comprehensively amended by the Constitution (Amendment) (No. 2) Act 2021 to create the republic. Chapter III protects fundamental rights. A Constitutional Reform Commission has been consulting on an entirely new constitution to replace the amended independence text.

Separation of powers
Unitary. Parliament legislates for the whole island and the 11 parishes have no legislative powers; there is no elected local government tier.
