Constitution of the Commonwealth of Dominica

In force from independence on 3 November 1978, establishing a republic with a President as ceremonial head of state elected by the House of Assembly. Chapter I protects fundamental rights. The Carib Reserve Act, and the constitutional recognition of communal land in the Kalinago Territory, restrict alienation of that land to non-members.

Separation of powers

Unitary. The ten parishes are administrative; village and town councils exercise delegated functions, and the Kalinago Council administers the Kalinago Territory.
