Political Constitution of the Republic of Nicaragua
Adopted 19 November 1986 and in force from 9 January 1987, replacing the post-revolutionary Fundamental Statute. Reformed in 1995, 2000, 2005, 2014 and 2021. The 2014 reform abolished presidential term limits and removed the run-off requirement; subsequent amendments extended the term to six years and created a co-presidency.

Separation of powers
Unitary, with 15 departments and two autonomous regions — the Región Autónoma de la Costa Caribe Norte and Sur — which have regional councils and recognised communal property.
