The three branches
- Executive — President and Prime Minister
- President elected for five years, renewable once.
- Legislative — National Assembly
- Unicameral, 165 deputies.
- Judicial — Cour suprême, Conseil constitutionnel, Cour des comptes

How legislation is made
Bills originate with the government or deputies, are examined in committee and voted in plenary. The President promulgates within the constitutional period or refers the text to the Conseil constitutionnel.
Enforcement institutions
- Police nationale and Gendarmerie nationale
- Urban policing and territorial gendarmerie respectively.
- Parquet (Ministère public)
- Prosecutors under the Minister of Justice direct criminal action.
