The hierarchy, top to bottom
- Constitutional — Constitutioneel Hof
- Installed 2020; reviews legislation against the Constitution and treaties.
- Supreme — Hof van Justitie van Suriname
- Highest ordinary court; hears appeals and sits at first instance in some matters.
- First instance — Kantongerechten
- Cantonal courts in three districts handling civil and criminal matters.
- Specialised — Krijgsraad
- Military court; tried the 8 December 1982 murders case.
