Its public-interest jurisdiction is among the most active in the region: it ordered legal recognition of a third gender in Sunil Babu Pant (2007), well ahead of most jurisdictions, and directed criminalisation of marital rape in 2002. A dedicated Constitutional Bench established under the 2015 constitution hears federalism disputes, and in 2021 the court twice reinstated a dissolved House of Representatives.
