The Saint Christopher and Nevis Constitution

Given effect by the Saint Christopher and Nevis Constitution Order 1983, in force at independence on 19 September 1983. Chapter II protects fundamental rights. Chapter X creates the Nevis Island Administration and Assembly with legislative competence over specified island matters, and section 113 sets out the secession procedure, making this an asymmetric federation of two units.

The constitutional text

Given effect by the Saint Christopher and Nevis Constitution Order 1983, in force at independence on 19 September 1983. Chapter II protects fundamental rights. Chapter X creates the Nevis Island Administration and Assembly with legislative competence over specified island matters, and section 113 sets out the secession procedure, making this an asymmetric federation of two units.

Separation of powers

Federal but asymmetric: Nevis has its own Assembly and executive with powers over island matters listed in Schedule 5, while Saint Kitts has no equivalent island legislature and is governed directly by the federal Parliament.
