Legislation and primary sources

Where to find the authoritative text of the law in Saint Lucia, and how to confirm it is still in force.

Sources of law, ranked

The Constitution
Supreme law.
Civil Code of Saint Lucia
Codified private law of Quebec and ultimately French origin; the distinctive feature of the jurisdiction.
Acts of Parliament
House of Assembly and Senate.
English common law and equity
Governs procedure, evidence, criminal law and public law, and fills gaps in the Code.

The legislative process

Bills pass three readings in the House of Assembly and the Senate before the Governor-General assents. The Senate may delay but not veto. Most constitutional amendments require a two-thirds majority of the House, and certain entrenched provisions require a three-quarters majority plus approval by referendum.
