How the executive, legislature and administrative state are organised, and which body is responsible for what.
The three branches
- Head of State — President of the Slovak Republic
- Directly elected for five years; veto overridable by absolute majority.
- Executive — Government under the Prime Minister
- Answerable to the National Council.
- Legislative — National Council (150 members)
- Unicameral; elected by nationwide proportional representation.
- Judicial — Ordinary, administrative and specialised courts
- Judicial Council selects judges; life appointment.
How legislation is made
Bills pass three readings in the National Council. A presidential veto is overridden by an absolute majority of all members. Laws take effect on publication in the Collection of Laws (Slov-Lex).

- Hierarchical prosecution service headed by an elected General Prosecutor.
- Police Force of the Slovak Republic
- National police under the Ministry of the Interior.
- National Crime Agency (NAKA)
- Organised crime, corruption and financial crime.
