Laos has no constitutional court and no judicial review of legislation: under the Constitution the National Assembly supervises constitutionality, and the courts apply statutes without power to set them aside. The Lao People's Revolutionary Party's leading role is constitutionally entrenched, and the judiciary operates within that structure. Village mediation units handle a large share of civil and family disputes before any court involvement.
