Every tier of the judiciary, what it hears, and where an appeal goes next.
The hierarchy, top to bottom
- Constitutional — Supreme Constitutional Court
- Exclusive constitutional review and binding statutory interpretation; sits in Cairo.
- Final appellate — Court of Cassation
- Final civil and criminal appeals on points of law.
- Administrative — Council of State (Majlis al-Dawla)
- A separate administrative jurisdiction headed by the Supreme Administrative Court.
- Appellate — Courts of Appeal
- Regional; also try felonies at first instance in their criminal circuits.
- First instance — Courts of First Instance and district courts
- Civil, commercial and misdemeanour matters; family courts sit within this tier.
