Constitution of the Republic of El Salvador
In force since 20 December 1983 and central to the 1992 Chapultepec peace accords, which added civilian control of the armed forces, the Policía Nacional Civil and the human-rights Procuraduría. Article 29 allows suspension of specified guarantees for 30 renewable days; Article 248 entrenches the ban on altering the presidential term.

Separation of powers
Unitary, with 14 departments. A 2023 reform cut municipalities from 262 to 44 and the Legislative Assembly from 84 seats to 60.
