Legislation and primary sources

Where to find the authoritative text of the law in El Salvador, and how to confirm it is still in force.

Sources of law, ranked

Constitution
Article 144 places ratified treaties above ordinary statutes.
Statutes of the Legislative Assembly
Single chamber; some organic statutes need a qualified majority.
Codes
Civil Code 1859, Labour Code 1972, Criminal Code 1997, Family Code 1994.
Constitutional Chamber precedent
Binding, including its self-executing remedies.

The legislative process

A bill is approved by simple majority of elected deputies unless a qualified majority is specified. The President may veto or return a bill as unconstitutional; if the Assembly insists by two-thirds and the President still objects on constitutional grounds, the Supreme Court decides.
