Government and administration in Hungary
How the executive, legislature and administrative state are organised, and which body is responsible for what.
The three branches
- Head of State — President of the Republic
- Elected by Parliament for five years; may return bills or refer them to the Constitutional Court.
- Executive — Government under the Prime Minister
- Prime Minister elected by Parliament; removable only by constructive no confidence.
- Legislative — National Assembly (199 members)
- Unicameral; mixed single-member and list system.
- Judicial — Four-tier courts headed by the Curia
- Administered by the National Office for the Judiciary under NJC supervision.
How legislation is made
Bills are debated in the National Assembly and adopted by simple majority, or two-thirds for cardinal statutes. The President signs within five days, or may return the bill once or refer it for constitutional review before promulgation in Magyar Közlöny.
