Constitution of the Fourth Republic
Adopted by referendum in 2010 following the 2009 political crisis, establishing the Fourth Republic. It provides for a directly elected President alongside a Prime Minister and government answerable to the National Assembly, and creates the Haute Cour Constitutionnelle with jurisdiction over constitutional review and the supervision of elections.

Separation of powers
Unitary with a decentralised structure of 23 regions and communes. Successive constitutions have promised fuller decentralisation, including provincial autonomy, which has not been implemented.
