Created by the post-Suharto constitutional amendments and one of the most consequential new courts in Asia: any citizen with a constitutional interest may petition it directly to strike down a statute. It reviews statutes only against the Constitution — review of regulations below statutory level belongs to the Supreme Court, so choosing the wrong forum is a common and fatal error. Its 2023 decision on presidential candidate age limits was followed by an ethics ruling against its own chief justice.
