The hierarchy, top to bottom
- Constitutional — Corte de Constitucionalidad
- Five titular magistrates, five-year terms, each named by a different institution.
- Supreme — Corte Suprema de Justicia
- 13 magistrates elected by Congress for five years.
- Appellate — Salas de la Corte de Apelaciones
- Also sit as amparo courts of first instance.
- First instance — Juzgados de Primera Instancia
- Civil, labour, family and criminal.
