The hierarchy, top to bottom
- Constitutional and supreme — Suprema Corte de Justicia de la Nación
- Sits in plenary and in two chambers; final word on constitutionality.
- Specialised supreme — Tribunal Electoral del Poder Judicial de la Federación
- Final authority on elections, including presidential validation.
- Appellate — Tribunales Colegiados de Circuito
- Decide most amparo appeals; the practical ceiling for ordinary litigants.
- First instance — Juzgados de Distrito
- Federal trial courts, including amparo indirecto.
